Asian Woman have taken some time to look at the statistics available for the UK Asian
community, and done a little research ourselves and have found some interesting results.
Population:
• Asians make up over 3.5% of the total UK population, 2 million out
of nearly 59 million.
• Nearly 1.8% of these are Indian, and 1.25% is Pakistani.
• Over 96% of all Asians in the UK live in England itself.
• Over 43% live in London and the South East.
• Less than 4% (under 75,000) live in Scotland, Wales and Northern Ireland.
• 35% of all UK Asians live in London itself (735,000).
• Outside London the largest communities are in the West midlands (360,000), North West (215,000), Yorkshire and the Humber (210,000), the East (163,000) and the East Midlands (157,000).
• 41% of the Indian Community lives in London and 17% live in the West midlands.
• The most evenly spread Asian Community in the UK is Pakistani, with 19% living in London, 21% in the West Midlands, 20% in Yorkshire and Humberside, and 16% in the North West.

Spending:
• Women are the primary spenders in UK households. They spend the most per household in 77% of consumer markets, particularly for Skin Care, Colour Cosmetics, Hair Care, and Premium Cosmetics.
Asian Women have control over the majority of household spending, focusing
on certain brands like cosmetics, skin care and hair care. Asian Households
are the largest in the UK, so Asian Woman have proportionately more money
to spend than in any other consumer group.
Spending:
• The UK Clothing and Footwear market reached almost £36
billion in 2004, a rise of over 15% since 1998.
The Asian Market accounts for £1.26 billion a year on clothes and footwear,
the majority spent by women. Asian consumers spend 44% more on clothing per
month than other consumers.
18 – 39 Year Old Market:
• Spend £260m on bath and Shower products, 37% of the market, each year.
• Spend £12.67 billion on Clothing and Footwear, 35% of the market, each year.
• Spend £403m on Colour Cosmetics, 41% of the market, each year.
• Spend £96m on Deodorants, 38% of the market, each year.
• Spend £693m on Hair Care, 38% of the market, each year.
• Spend £186m on Men’s Grooming, 38% of the market, each year.
• Spend £237m on Skin Care, 33% of the market, each year.
Asian Woman’s readership is largely comprised of 18-39 year olds, who are
responsible for a high proportion of all spending on beauty and health care
products, accounting for 37% of ALL the UK’s spending in these areas.
• 67% of Asians believe that consumer brands use ethnic faces in advertising as a token gesture.
• 77% are worried that marketing by mainstream brands had no relevance to them.
• 63% believe that consumer brands are not aware of how to market to individuals from ethnic backgrounds.
• 60% would be more inclined to purchase a product if they noticed it was advertised to multi cultural consumers.
• 55% of Asians stated they don’t drink alcohol and spend more money on soft drinks and fruit juices.
Asian – 52% Ribena, 40% Tropicana
Caucasian – 23% Ribena, 13% Tropicana
•32% of Asians state Nike is one of the brands they buy most compared with only 20% in the mainstream market.
•Asian consumers spend £28 per month on electronics compared to £14 for other consumer.
•Asians spend on average £246 per month on Food / Going Out / Clothes / Cosmetics / Electronics / Film / Books and Music. This is compared to only £219 per month for other consumers.
