The Accessory People and Asian Woman Magazine donate 34K to Crimestoppers
On Thursday 11th December 2008 the CEO of The Accessory People Group, Nasa Khan, presented a cheque to the CEO of Crimestoppers, Michael Laurie CBE, for an impressive 34K.
The money was raised in part from The Asian Woman Awards for Excellence 2008, held on 22nd November 2008 at Whitehall Palace Banqueting House in Central London and hosted by Asian Woman Magazine - the largest Asian woman’s glossy title in the world.
This prestigious event is the magazine’s main charity function and raised 15K for the worthwhile charity Crimestoppers this year. However, not satisfied with this sum, businessman Nasa Khan topped up the donation to give an outstanding 34K to the charity.
The handover of the cheque was part of a private ceremony at the TAP and Asian Woman Magazine offices in Chessington. Michael Laurie from Crimestoppers was of course pleased with the donation and said:
“It’s really important to us as we’re a relatively small charity and an amount of money like this is actually quite significant. We have very ambitious plans to work in Asian communities because there is a very high level of crime amongst young people and they’re very often the victims. This is what we want to do with the money - to encourage people to use Crimestoppers to make their community safer. We are very grateful to Asian Woman magazine for supporting us and to The Accessory People. This money will do an awful lot of good in the communities.”
The ceremony was also attended by Adam Sache from Crimestoppers as well as Kingston Council Deputy Leader, Barry O’Mahoney. On Asian Woman and TAP working with the community, Mr O’Mahony said:
“This is not the first event in which I’ve seen this magazine and the people behind it helping. I know that Nasa has been involved in helping events in Kingston. I would like to see the council and the people of the Borough work more with businesses like The Accessory People and Asian Woman. I’m pleased and I’m happy to be here today.”
About Nasa Khan
Nasa Khan is chairman of The Accessory People, a supplier of mobile phone and palm-top computer accessories. In 2007 the company turn-over was recorded as £1.25bn.
The son of a Surrey bus driver, he borrowed £2,000 from friends to open his first mobile phone shop, launching The Accessory People in 1995 in Chessington. Khan thanks his parents for instilling in him an ethos of "ambition, drive and determination". Featured in The Sunday Times Rich List as one of Britain’s top 100 young entrepreneurs at the age of 29; named Entrepreneur of the Year in the National Business Awards in 2002; and having received many accolades since, he is recognised for his exceptional vision and leadership.
More over he is using his rapidly increasing wealth charitably, with donations totaling more than £250,000 in the past year, £225,000 of which has gone towards educational causes. At a local level, he has put more than £23,000 into supporting the Kingston Little League, a football competition for juniors in southwest London, close to Khan's home base, helping the Asian elderly, and he also sponsored a facelift for Chessington North Railway Station. Khan has also long supported Save The Children with donations in the past couple of years exceeding £100,000.
Khan on his earliest memory of doing business:
"I was a child, and I was in the nursery schools, and we were selling little diaries, and buying them for 50 pence and selling them for a £1, and we knew where to get them from and no-one else did. It was as simple as that - buy and sell - a case of supply and demand."

About Crimestoppers
The independent charity – which is celebrating its 20 year anniversary this year - plays a pivotal role in helping to keep the UK safe by appealing for public information to solve crimes across the country. The service is free and completely confidential, ensuring that callers receive a professional and helpful service without fear of reprisals for giving information.
The charity works with its many volunteers as well as through various campaigns with partner organisations to raise awareness and support. Its most recent campaigns target domestic violence and gun and knife crime.
The £34,000 raised at The Asian Woman Awards for Excellence will go towards combating domestic violence in communities as well as tackling youth crime, among other projects.
